Michael landed the helicopter behind the barn and Romano forced him, at gunpoint, into the office.
Romano, agitated and desperate, shoved Michael into a chair and looked around for some rope. Finding none, he grabbed a heavy-duty electrical extension cord that was hanging neatly coiled on the wall and used it to bind Michael to the chair. He thought about knocking Michael out with a blow to the head with the butt of the pistol but decided against it. For all his bravado Romano really had no stomach for inflicting pain. Shooting Banyon had been an accident. But what was done was done. His only thought now was to get away as fast as possible. He walked up behind Michael and put the barrel of the gun to Michael’s head. Michael’s body tensed up. After several long moments Romano lowered the gun and leaned down. He put his mouth next to Michael’s ear and whispered, “This is your lucky day.” With those parting words Romano left the barn and hurried to his car.
As soon as Michael heard the car drive away he struggled to free himself. After several minutes of twisting and turning he managed to loosen the cord and wriggle out of the restraint. Exhausted, he ran to the phone to call the police but the phone was dead. It took him a moment to figure it out. While I was still at the cliff with Caldwell and the others the bastard must have cut the outside line! Then he panicked as he remembered his wife had been alone in the house. Jesus! Renée! He sprinted out of the office and rushed to the house calling her name. There was no answer. He ran to the front door. It was locked.
“Renée!” he shouted. Still no answer.
He pounded on the door. Nothing. Moving around to the other side of the house he found the back door unlocked. He entered and shouted again, “Renée!” Then he heard a muffled scream. He worked his way through the house, moving toward the sound and found her tied up and gagged, lying on the bedroom floor. She was crying. “That son of a…!” Michael cursed. He lowered the gag from her mouth and untied her hands. “Are you all right?”
“Yes, I… I think so,” she said, choking the words out.
Gently, he helped her up and sat her on the bed. “Thank god,” he said.
“Michael,” she sobbed, looking up at him. “I was so scared! Who was that man? What’s happened?”
Michael brought her a glass of water and was torn about what to do next. He wanted to stay and comfort his wife but the longer he waited the more of a lead Romano would have. If he jumped into the helicopter right now he could track Romano down and ram him off the road. He could cause enough damage to the car that it would be impossible for Romano to go any further except on foot. That would allow me enough time to get to the village and call the police.
